Rates of business ownership and self-employment are lower in most communities of color than among whites. More striking, the market share gap is more than 4 to 1 – the proportion of total sales and receipts of minority-owned businesses compared to white-owned businesses is less than one-fourth of the proportion of the minority population in the U.S.
Addressing this business wealth gap is crucial to strengthening the economic health of minority communities and the larger economy. This is an opportunity to hear from experts working in the field.

The presenters will address:
The Need: Why is business ownership important in closing the racial wealth gap?
The Solutions: Policy tools and levers, targeted business services and finance, research, and an organized minority business community, and
Your Input: An opportunity for you to share your experiences with others
Tim Lohrentz will discuss the Insight Center’s Inclusive Business Initiative and the role that states, cities, financial institutions, and foundations can play in closing the racial wealth gap.
Aarathi Deshmukh will describe a systems approach to closing the business wealth gap, such as the AAJC’s Asian American Contractor Empowerment Project. She will also discuss need for links between local nonprofits engaged in micro enterprise and national civil rights and business associations.
Barbara Robles will discuss her research which documents effective ways to increase number self-employed persons and how self-employment can lead to wealth creation and business growth among minorities. In addition to her teaching role at the ASU School of Social Wealth, Barbara is affiliated with the ASU Office of Latino Projects.
Thais Rezende will describe how the Women's Initiative for Self-Employment and its program 'Alternativas para Latinas en Autosuficiencia', helps women to overcome barriers such as capacity, finance, and access to markets, as well as barriers specific to women or persons of color.
