NNSP Conference Events

Welcome Reception

Anniversary Dinner
Thursday, November 12

Dinner: 7:30 - 9:30 PM
Attendance at this dinner is included in your conference registration at no additional cost.

Keynote speaker: U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis

The conference coincides with NNSP's 10th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of our parent organization, the Insight Center for Community Economic Development. All conference attendees are invited to a celebratory dinner to hear from and interact with leaders interested not only in promoting and supporting sectoral workforce development but also in closing the racial wealth gap, demonstrating the economic impact of early care and education, promoting inclusion in government contracts, and using accurate cost-of-living measures to advance economic security for families and seniors.

Industry-Specific Communities
Session 1: Wednesday, November 11, 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Session 2: Thursday, November 12, 4:00 - 5:30 PM

NNSP will convene conference attendees by industry to: meet same-sector colleagues from around the country, learn from each other about innovative program models and best practices, and build a common agenda and platform for future work together. NNSP staff will facilitate two 90-minute meetings for each sector that has a critical mass of interested attendees. Meetings will take place outside of workshop sessions and plenaries. For sectors with few attendees, we will provide meeting time and space and will help interested attendees connect.

Meetings have been confirmed for the following industries:

Construction
Healthcare
Hospitality and Food Service
Manufacturing

Site Visits

NNSP has organized site visits to innovative sector initiatives in the Washington, D.C. area. Site visits are scheduled at different times throughout the conference at the same time as workshop sessions. Because space is limited, each attendee may participate in only one site visit. There is no additional cost to attend a site visit and transportation will be provided.

DC Central Kitchen

Provides culinary job training to unemployed, underemployed, previously incarcerated, and homeless adults in the context of a community kitchen, a catering business, and numerous partnerships with employers, social services providers, local businesses, and concerned citizens.

Year Up Washington DC

A one-year, intensive training program that provides Washington area young adults, 18-24, with a unique combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate apprenticeships in information technology.

Washington Area Women in the Trades (WAWIT)

A collaborative initiative of Wider Opportunities for Women, the AFL-CIO's Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington, and the YWCA National Capital Area to provide pre-apprenticeship training to low-income women for high-wage jobs in the construction sector.

Phelps Architecture, Construction, and Engineering High School

Phelps High School provides students a comprehensive education in design and construction, connections with apprenticeships, and preparation for college. The AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department and metro-DC area building and construction trades helped develop it. A green school, Phelps is the first in the District to receive LEED certification.

Pre-Conference Events

NNSP is hosting pre-conference sessions on Tuesday, November 10. At present, only one event, the Sector Skills Academy Reunion, is scheduled. All conference registrants will receive news about additional sessions as they are added.

Sector Skills Academy Reunion
Tuesday, November 10
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Alumni of the Sector Skills Academy are invited to network and engage with one another around topics of importance to the sector field. Additional details will be provided to past and present Fellows in advance of the reunion. This session is open to current and past participants in the Sector Skills Academy only. There is no cost to participate.
